MASAMI Haircare Review: My Honest Take on the Mekabu Shampoo and Conditioner

Let me paint you a picture of my hair for the last 5 years…

Some of it curls. Some of it waves. Some of it... does neither and just reaches straight up toward the sky like it's trying to escape my head entirely. Every individual strand with its own agenda. Every wash day turning into a hostile negotiation attempt I can never quite seem to settle.

I have what I would generously describe as “hair that is thinking about being wavy.” It has aspirations. Ambitions. Occasional bursts of curly enthusiasm. But the commitment is… apparently not unanimous.

Parts of it are fully on board. Other parts are like, “here’s four waves, take it or leave it.” Then there’s the frizz. The individual hairs that have collectively decided UP is a direction and they’re going there.

That was before MASAMI.

What Is MASAMI?

MASAMI is a clean, premium haircare brand built around the hero ingredient: Mekabu, a Japanese ocean botanical harvested from the nutrient-rich waters off Northeastern Japan. The name MASAMI means "truly beautiful" in Japanese, and the brand's whole philosophy is built around one thing your hair is probably starving for.

Hydration.

The brand was co-founded by Lynn Power and James Hammett, who spent nearly a decade developing the formulas before MASAMI ever launched. The story centers around Northeastern Japan and a seaweed called mekabu, an ocean botanical that locals have used for generations. Years of experimentation, refinement, and testing eventually became the products sitting in my shower today.

That is a deeply "trust the process" story and I respect it. And honestly, that's what made me curious enough to try it. Plenty of brands promise hydration. Not many spend ten years building a formula around it.

The Mekabu Deep Dive (Because You Deserve to Know What You're Putting in Your Hair)

Mekabu is a specific part of the wakame plant, and it is genuinely fascinating. It's harvested seasonally by a family-owned operation in Northeastern Japan with over 70 years of experience growing and processing this exact crop. MASAMI sources it directly and turns it into the star ingredient behind the entire line.

The reason it works for hair? It acts like a sponge. It absorbs and holds hydration without the heaviness that many moisturizing ingredients can bring with them. So your hair gets the moisture it's been desperately asking for without becoming a limp, greasy situation.

Honestly, this was the point where the whole thing started making sense to me. My hair doesn't need more heaviness. It needs more moisture. Those are not the same thing, and a surprising number of products seem to confuse the two.

The supporting cast is doing some heavy lifting as well: kombu seaweed for scalp nourishment, blueberry extract rich in antioxidants that support scalp and hair health, aloe vera for hydration and softness, and panthenol (Vitamin B5) for manageability and shine.

And the things that are NOT in the formula deserve a mention too: sulfates, parabens, phthalates, and other ingredients that can be unnecessarily harsh on hair. MASAMI is also certified vegan, Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free, and safe for color-treated hair.

Now, all of that sounds lovely on paper.

But ingredients lists and origin stories can only take a product so far.

What actually matters is what happened when I used it.

What I Actually Use

MASAMI launched with four products and I've tried three of them:

Mekabu Hydrating Shampoo ($38)

The wash that started it all. I need to be honest with you: the texture threw me off initially. It's runny. There is no suds situation happening. If you're an American shampoo girlie like me, you've been conditioned your whole life to associate thick lather with "clean." I know it's psychological. I know the sulfates that create that foam are also exactly what strips your hair of moisture. I know this. And still, the first wash I was like... is this working?

It was working.

Mekabu Hydrating Conditioner ($38)

The conditioner was thinner than I expected, and it doesn't have that thick, slimy, coats-everything feeling I usually go for. Which, again, was a psychological adjustment.

But here's the thing: if a conditioner feels like it's coating your hair in a layer of something heavy, it probably is. The MASAMI conditioner actually absorbs. You feel the hydration going in, not sitting on top.

Mekabu Hydrating Shine Serum ($34)

This is a beautiful product. And honestly, the fact that I've been waiting until day 2 or 3 to use it tells you everything you need to know.

Normally, my hair starts asking for help almost immediately. After using the shampoo and conditioner, it simply didn't need the extra moisture yet. That is genuinely not something I have ever been able to say about my hair.

The fact that I'm saving the shine serum for later instead of reaching for it immediately speaks volumes.

My Results

Not my actual hair, but VERY true to my results!

First wash: the rising situation? Dramatically reduced. Like, noticeably. The individual hairs staging an uprising toward the ceiling were significantly calmer.

Washes after that: even calmer. My hair started doing something I don't have a word for except "thinking harder about curling." Parts that had previously given up on the idea are now tentatively giving it another shot.

I wouldn't call it a full curl transformation, but it's like someone finally spoke to my hair in a language it understood and now it's reconsidering its options.

The scent is incredible. Clean, fresh, light, and it actually lasts. I wash my hair every 4–5 days and can still catch hints of it on day 4, which is genuinely impressive.

I should also say: I have dry hair. This is very much a dry-hair win. If you're naturally oily or a frequent washer, your mileage may vary. The intense moisture might be more than your scalp wants. But if your hair is dry, frizzy, and living its best chaotic life? This is for it.

The Bigger Picture

Something I really appreciate about MASAMI beyond the results: the brand actually gives a damn.

They launched the MASAMI Institute after tsunamis devastated the bays and marine ecosystems of Northeastern Japan, right where they source their hero ingredient. The Institute supports local marine biology research, works with fishermen and conservation groups, and helps preserve the ecosystem they depend on.

They take from the ocean. They give back to the ocean. That's the kind of brand alignment that makes me feel good about where my money goes.

The Honest Summary

Love: The results. The smell and how long it lasts. The fact that my hair is genuinely behaving differently. The clean ingredient list. The brand's mission and origin story.

Adjust your expectations: The runny shampoo texture. No big lather moment and you're going to want to focus on your scalp primarily. The conditioner isn't slimy (I said what I said, some of us like slimy) and you'll want to focus more on your ends. These aren't flaws, they're features. But if you're coming from conventional drugstore haircare, your brain will take a wash or two to catch up to what your hair already knows.

Honestly, that's where the missing 0.4 points went for me. My hair loved MASAMI immediately. My expectations just needed a little time to catch up.

Best for: Best for: Dry, frizzy, wavy-curly-chaotic hair. Anyone chasing hydration without the heaviness. The person who has tried everything and is still asking why their hair looks like a question mark.

Maybe reconsider if: You're naturally oily, you wash your hair every day, or you require a dramatic lather moment to feel psychologically clean.
